A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SAN RAFAEL
SUPPORTING A CAPITAL GRANT APPLICATION TO THE METROPOLITAN
TRANSPORTATION COMMISSION'S TRANSPORTATION FOR LIVABLE
COMMUNITIES PROGRAM FOR THE MEDWAY./CANAL INTERSECTION
IMPROVEMENT PROJECT.
WHEREAS, the corridor formed by Francisco Boulevard East and Medway
Road/Canal Street functions as a major artery for private and commercial vehicles,
Golden Gate Transit and school buses, pedestrians and bicycles and as an informal
gathering place for residents; and
WHEREAS, many participants in the 1996-97 Canal Voice community planning
process focused on pedestrian, bicycle and motor vehicle safety issues in and around the
corridor and on ways to enhance the neighborhood's image and sense of community; and
WHEREAS, the City of San Rafael applied for and received a $10,000 grant
from the Metropolitan Transportation Commission's Transportation for Livable
Communities program for planning and design services related to the Medway/Canal
corridor, and matched that amount with an additional $10,000 in Gas Tax funds; and
WHEREAS, the urban design and planning firm Amphion Environmental, Inc.,
has conducted a comprehensive community planning effort to create a design consistent
with the diverse transportation and cultural needs of the community; and
WHEREAS, City staff will apply for capital funds from the Metropolitan
Transportation Commission's Transportation for Livable Communities program to
construct the Medway/Canal improvements; and
WHEREAS, a resolution of support by the Council will strengthen our capital
grant application.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City Council of the City of
San Rafael hereby expresses its enthusiastic support for the Medway/Canal Intersection
Improvement project and the aforementioned application for capital funds from the
Metropolitan Transportation Commission's Transportation for Livable Communities
program.
I, JEANNE M. LEONCINI, Clerk of the City of San Rafael, hereby certify that
the foregoing resolution was duly and regularly introduced and adopted at a regular
meeting of the City Council of said City held on Monday the 181h day of March, 2002, by
the following vote, to wit:
