DATE: March 10, 2010
RECOMMENDATION: Approve Resolution authorizing temporary closure of Pt. San Pedro Road from
Riviera Drive to Biscayne Drive for Marin County Marathon April 25, 2010 from 7:00am to 12:00pm.
BACKGROUND: The annual Marin County Marathon will be held Sunday morning, April 25, 2010
beginning at 7:00am, at McNear's Beach County Park in San Rafael. This is a not for profit event. ALL
proceeds are being donated to charity, which include for this year, the Prostate Cancer Foundation and San
Rafael's Parents Place.
The event producer, Mark Liebert is a local businessman and quite adept at creating a successful,
sustainable event that is solely created to benefit local charities. Last year's marathon raised over five
thousand dollars and the November triathlon raised over two hundred thousand dollars. He has already
contacted the residents in the Peacock Gap informing them of this year's event with almost one hundred
percent positive responses. Up to a thousand local and national athletes will participate, providing much
needed funds to the charities mentioned above.
Event hours are 7:00am — 4:00pm
Street to be closed from 7:00am to 12:00pm: Eastbound San Pedro Road from Riviera Drive to Biscayne
Drive
The proposal will be coordinated with the Police, Fire, and Public Works.
FISCAL IMPACT: Staff and the Police Department are coordinating any City involvement with the event
producer, the County and the Highway Patrol. Since it is a very small part of the event course a minimum
number of Police Officers will be required. The producer will pay for all related Police Services. Cleanup
is being handled by the event producers.
ACTION REQUIRED: Approve Resolution authorizing temporary closure of eastbound Point San Pedro
Road at Riviera Drive to Biscayne Drive from lam to 12pm to allow for safe passage for the Marin County
Marathon athletes during this charity event.
