Background
•California Vehicle Code (CVC)
requires Engineering and Traffic
Surveys every 7 years in order to
enforce speed zones by radar
•“Speed Trap” Law
•85th percentile speed of vehicles
largely dictates speed limits

Background
•W-Trans was hired last spring
•31 segments studied and re-verified at the same posted
speed
•8 segments deferred due to SMART construction
•2 segments would become enforceable with passing of
ordinance

Findings
•Redwood Highway and Los
Gamos Drive: 85th percentile
speed of 33 mph
•Round to nearest 5 = 35 mph
•Apply 5 mph reduction for
higher-than-average collision
rates and pace of cars = 30
mph
•Staff is recommending the
posted speed be changed to
30 mph to comply with CVC
33 mph

Next Steps
•Staff recommends Council pass ordinance to print
–2nd Reading at March 18 City Council
•If Council approves, change is publicly noticed
•Signs installed by Public Works crews
•Posted speeds go into effect 30 days later
Los Gamos from Lucas Valley to 1401 Los Gamos 30 mph
Redwood Highway from 4222 Redwood to Freitas Pkwy 30 mph
