MELANIE LEAVITT CANTARUTTI, CHAIR, PRESIDING MEMBERS PRESENT: MELANIE LEAVITT CANTARUTTI JOSH LIBRESCO DOUG VAN GESSEL MEMBERS ABSENT: JAIMI CORTES OTHERS PRESENT: SARAH HOUGHTON, LIBRARY DIRECTOR MIRIAM WALLEN, ADULT SERVICES LIBRARIAN APPROVAL OF AGENDA The agenda was unanimously approved on a motion by Libresco and a second by Van Gessel. APPROVAL OF MINUTES March minutes were unanimously approved on a motion by Van Gessel and a second by Cantarutti. PUBLIC COMMENT None. STAFF PRESENTATION Miriam Wallen, Downtown Library Adult Services Librarian, talked about some of the recent events and programs held for adults and teens. One Book One Marin has had a series of programs including the kick-off event at Book Passage, a book discussion at the Downtown Library, a workshop on difficult conversations at the Downtown Library, and the final event is coming up on the 18th at Dominican University. In collaboration with Marin General Hospital, the Downtown Library also offered a series of workshops called a Matter of Balance geared toward fall prevention. There is also an ongoing series of local author talks. Coming up is summer reading, the teen advisory committee’s ongoing events with local leaders, a knitting club, and outreach events at senior care facilities to assist people with getting library eBooks onto their devices. CORRESPONDENCE None REPORT FROM LIBRARY DIRECTOR Facility Updates Noll & Tam continues work on the research phase of our facilities project and will be taking over the “health of the Downtown Library” assessment. The Downtown Library’s HVAC system has sprung a number of leaks that we are dealing with as they arise. Library Trustee Recruitment The City is planning to hold interviews on April 16th. Diverse Books The Pickleweed Library’s Books Beyond Borders tween book club celebrated its two year anniversary. The club reads books from around the world and experiences cultural food and crafts from each location. The #StyleTeam The Library has been working on more cross-division team-based projects, including the Style Team—a team dedicated to improving wayfinding and user experiences in our libraries. The team recently went on a field trip to a few Peninsula Libraries to get inspiration. Margaret Stawowy: Employee of the Quarter Downtown Children’s Librarian Margaret Stawowy was chosen as the City of San Rafael’s Employee of the Quarter for the 4th quarter of 2017. This is a much deserved award and the whole Library team couldn’t be more proud of Margaret. Volunteer Appreciation Party Library staff hopes you can join us at the annual Volunteer Appreciation Party on Friday, April 13th from 6-7:30. REPORTS FROM LIBRARY SUPPORT GROUPS AND OTHER RELATED GROUPS Friends of the Library: The Friends Board will be meeting tomorrow to discuss their future staffing and space needs SRPL Foundation: The Foundation has not met. Special Library Parcel Tax Committee: The Committee has not met. OLD BUSINESS None NEW BUSINESS Public Comment at Library Board of Trustees Meetings The City Attorney’s Office advises that per California Government Code 59553.3c, legislative bodies (such as the Library Board of Trustees) must give the public the opportunity to directly address the body either before or during the legislative body’s consideration of agenda items. Unless directed by City Council to do otherwise, the Library Board of Trustees will continue to allow public comment at the beginning of every meeting on items both on and not on the agenda. National Library Week 2018 This week both libraries celebrated National Library Week as well as National Library Workers Day, which is today. Zip Books Project Today the Library soft-launched the Zip Books project, a California State Library and Califa project. Zip Books is a way for customers to request books that the Library doesn’t own and the item is shipped directly to the customer via Amazon Prime.
