SARAH HOUGHTON, LIBRARY DIRECTOR, PRESIDING MEMBERS PRESENT: JOSH LIBRESCO MELANIE LEAVITT CANTARUTTI JAIMI CORTES MEMBERS MISSING: DOUG VAN GESSEL OTHERS PRESENT: SARAH HOUGHTON, LIBRARY DIRECTOR JAMIE POIRIER, LIBRARY TECHNICAL SERVICES SUPERVISOR APPROVAL OF AGENDA The agenda was unanimously approved on a motion by Cantarutti and a second by Libresco. NOMINATION AND ELECTION OF NEW BOARD CHAIR Cantarutti graciously accepted election as chair unanimously on a motion by Libresco and a second by Cortes. APPROVAL OF MINUTES December minutes were approved unanimously on a motion by Libresco and a second by Cortes. PUBLIC COMMENT None STAFF PRESENTATION Jamie Poirier briefly described the role of Technical Services within the Library and then talked about two recent projects in the division. 1) Being one of ten libraries grant funded by the State Library to offer Starling reading kits—a tracker with an app that keeps count of how many words per day your infant or toddler hears through speech or song. 2) Consolidating multiple collections into more easy to find places for our customers. CORRESPONDENCE None REPORT FROM LIBRARY DIRECTOR City Council Actions On January 16th the City Council called for applications to fill one unexpired term on the Board of Library Trustees, authorized the Library to accept a $5,000 grant to fund immigration information services at the Pickleweed Library, and approved a contract with Noll & Tam Architects for the next phase of the Library Facilities Planning Project. Facility Updates A Request for Proposals is currently open for a “health of the building” assessment of the Downtown Library. Math Club – the Expanded Edition Math Club is now being offered three times a week, up from one, at the Downtown Library, with different sessions geared toward differenet grade levels. Math Club will happen weekly from 1/31-6/6. The Library Loves You Week The Library is repeating our popular “Your Library Loves You Week” from Sunday, February 11th through Sunday, February 18th. This is the staff’s chance to express gratitude to our community for their ongoing support with a different gift or experience each day. Digital Bookmobile Overdrive’s Digital Bookmobile will be visiting the Civic Center next to the Lagoon Park Playground from 10am-4pm on February 13th. Visitors can browse the Overdrive collection and get one-on-one help using OverDrive—including playing with the gadget gallery in the bookmobile. REPORTS FROM LIBRARY SUPPORT GROUPS AND OTHER RELATED GROUPS Friends of the Library: The Friends are actively seeking new volunteers for a variety of tasks, or for current volunteers to take on some more responsibilities and store hours or book sorting and pricing. SRPL Foundation: The Foundation is still receiving money from their annual appeal letter from late 2017. Special Library Parcel Tax Committee: The committee meets Thursday, February 15th. OLD BUSINESS None NEW BUSINESS Quarterly Budget Report 2017/2018 2nd quarter Houghton presented the 2nd quarter spreadsheet and narrative summary. The Library has expended 51% of the budget with 50% of the year elapsed. Quarterly Outreach Report 2017/2018 2nd quarter Houghton presented the library staff’s outreach efforts from the past quarter, largely geared toward Canal Alliance, the preschools, elementary schools, and middle schools. Also worth noting were a magic show, storytime, and craft presented by staff in October at the Fire Evacuation Center in San Rafael. Quarterly Strategic Plan Report 2017/2018 2nd quarter Houghton presented the updates in achievements to the strategic plan goals from the past quarter. Cantarutti made some excellent contextual formatting suggestions which will be incorporated into the next report. Net Neutrality – Resolution from MARINet Houghton presented MARINet’s draft resolution supporting net neutrality and opposing the FCC’s December decision. The resolution will be voted on this Thursday at the regular MARINet Board of Directors meeting. Public Library Trustees Ethics Statement Houghton presented the United for Libraries “Public Library Trustees Ethics Statement” for trustees to review. The document supports both the American Library Association’s Library Bill of Rights and Code of Professional Ethics, but from a trustee perspective. The statement is meant as an advisory document for Trustees, and it is not required that Trustees sign it. ADJOURNMENT Meeting adjourned at 7:01pm. Respectfully submitted by Sarah Houghton
