HENRY BANKHEAD, ASSISTANT LIBRARY DIRECTOR, AND CAROL MANASHIL, CHAIR, PRESIDING MEMBERS PRESENT: CAROL MANASHIL, CHAIR JOSH LIBRESCO MELANIE LEAVITT CANTARUTTI KAREN NIELSEN OTHERS ABSENT: NONE OTHERS PRESENT: HENRY BANKHEAD, ASSISTANT DIRECTOR JAMIE POIRIER, TECHNICAL SERVICES SUPERVISER APPROVAL OF AGENDA Agenda was approved unanimously on a motion by Cantarutti and a second by Libresco. APPROVAL OF MINUTES March minutes were approved on a motion by Nielsen and a second by Libresco. PUBLIC COMMENT None STAFF PRESENTATION Jamie Poirier, Technical Services Supervisor made a presentation about what goes on behind the scenes in Technical Services. She discussed examples of different library items, how they are handled, and elucidated larger work processes. Poirier stressed the aim of getting books that are received directly out to the patrons with minimum delay. She discussed the process of copy cataloging versus original cataloging. She referred to several recent projects in Technical Services including a combined graphic novel section and the reintegration of the “Most Wanted” children’s fiction collection into the general children’s fiction stacks. CORRESPONDENCE None REPORT FROM LIBRARY DIRECTOR Personnel Updates The Downtown Library currently has a vacancy in Adult Services for a Librarian I/II, and an upcoming vacancy for a part time Library Assistant at the Downtown Library. City Council Actions On April 3rd, City Council approved a Memorandum of Understanding with the San Rafael City School District to allow the public library to provide every school child with a library card. We will begin work on this project immediately. Facility Updates: There are no major projects outstanding, though we anticipate a top-to-bottom assessment of the Downtown Library facility to take place sometime in the coming months. Library Activities Library Facilities Project On March 15th, Group 4 Architects presented the results from their library facilities assessment project, including the extensive community survey that was done. Some Board members were present. A follow-up meeting was held with Library staff and the New Library City Council Subcommittee which led to action items going forward. The next step will be for the Library to work with Group 4 on a report and presentation to City Council. Employee Engagement Project The City of San Rafael as a whole has embarked on an employee engagement project involving every department. There is a steering committee called “Together San Rafael,” made up of staff from each department including three people from the Library. This group is working toward positive steps and action items to make the City a great place to work for everyone REPORTS FROM LIBRARY SUPPORT GROUPS AND OTHER RELATED GROUPS Friends of the Library: Friends of the Library (Karen Nielsen) is working steadily to prepare for the lawn sale in June moving book boxes. SRPL Foundation: report from Group 4 meeting Special Library Parcel Tax Committee: (Carol Manashil) none OLD BUSINESS None NEW BUSINESS Library Cards for San Rafael City Schools students—project update: Bankhead updated the board on the latest steps in out library card drive with San Rafael City Schools Library Facilities project—Group 4 meeting debrief and next steps: Bankhead reiterated written report from Library Director in oral Library Director comment.
