FIRE COMMISSION MEETING
Minutes of the Regular Meeting

Chair Mizroch called the meeting to order at 4:00 p.m.
I. Open Time for Public Expression:
Linda asked about getting a ride on the fire boat. Chair Mizroch will follow up.
II. Approval of Minutes:
Chair Mizroch asked for any additions or corrections to the minutes of the August 9,
2017 meeting. None were offered. Minutes were approved (Mizroch moved/Luckham
seconded/1 abstain, 3 yes).
III. Fire Foundation:
No report.
IV. Historic Subcommittee:
Historic items are being saved from the demolition of Station 51.
V. Chair and Commission Member Reports:
A. Chair Mizroch talked about a new breast cancer awareness patch being
sold for $10; the money will go to a breast cancer non-profit; SRFD is the only fire
department in the county participating (there are seven police departments
participating); Chair Mizroch also noted that in 1917 it cost $10,958 to build Station 51;

he also noted that San Rafael had only 841 people in 1870; there were 6,000 people by
1908; 13,848 people by 1950; and about 60,000 people today.
B. Vice Chair Luckham gifted a wooden fire truck model kit to Chief Gray on
his 10 year anniversary with SRFD; Vice Chair Luckham also discussed his service on
MERA oversight committee and the status of equipment and computer server
integration; he also mentioned he might be gone for the next meeting at a fire training in
Shasta/Trinity counties; he also discussed the canal ways property near Home Depot
and efforts to clear vegetation with goats; he also discussed the risk to homeless
persons living in the pampas grass and stated that the owner wants to develop housing
on the property.
C. Commissioner Weathers had nothing to report.
D. Commissioner Atieh recommended a fundraiser for SRFF; she suggested
getting stores to contribute for a natural disaster kit and then sell the kits through the
Foundation; she said she would follow-up and contact stores; Vice Chair Luckham
discussed the CERT program and its possible use for these kits; Alternate
Commissioner Fonkalsrud suggested reaching out to earthquake preparedness stores
as a potential partner.
E. Alternate Commissioner Fonkalsrud reminded everybody that the crab
feed was set for December 9, 2017 and that members of the SRFC would be
volunteering starting about 1:00 p.m.
VI. Fire Chief Report:
Chief Gray reported that the Station 52 and 57 projects are proceeding; he noted that
fire accountant Joyce McCarthy is in the hospital with complications following surgery
and that our thoughts and prayers are for a speedy recovery; he said Hatfield completed
his first year of probation and will get a badge with a number; Chief Gray commented
that the SRFD had over 100 applicants for open firefighter positions; he noted tha t OES
and Engine 358 returned; he also said there is mold abatement ongoing in one of the
fire stations; he mentioned the “last cup of coffee” at Station 51 with TV news crews
present; he said Engines 51 and 57 are in service as well as Fireboat Confidence ; he
commented that SRFD is transitioning EMS billing to a cloud based software; he
reminded everybody that SMART is now in service and has recommended to SRFD
personnel that they ride SMART to gain familiarity; he discussed vegetation
management and that SRFD would be wearing pink patch in October for breast cancer
awareness month; he then left the meeting early.

Chair Mizroch asked if there was anything further from anyone, and there being nothing
further, adjourned the meeting at 4:50 p.m.
