Dear Mr, Stafford,
1 am writing to inform you of my opposjtion to the proposed construction at Mark Day School.
The multi-story, 11,270 square foot design for a business building in a residential community is almost three times the size oCthe
existing discreet building, It is out of scale for the neighborhood and the designed building will:
.. Create an industrial feel in a residential
.. Invade privacy ofneighbors with second stolY views directly into tbeir homes
.. Block views of the trees and hills for neighboring homes and all who walk by
" NegativelY impact property values
.. Contliet with the original intent afthe Terra Linda Master plan of neighborhood schools
I ask that Mark School make improvements to their leased property in a way that works with the surrounding community tbey are
a part of. Jf built, the community wiil never what will be lost.
Thank you,
Dominique Rosenberg'

Dear Mr. Stafford,
I am opposed to the design of the proposed construction at Mark
Day School, 39 Trellis Drive, San Rafael, CA.
The design is out of scale and does not integrate with the character
of the neighborhood. The slats on the roof are industrial !ooking.
The architects describe it as modern and contemporary -there is
nothing modern or contemporary about our neighborhood.
The apllicant has repeatedly proposed trees to hide the architectural
elements, but the building is so large right next to a parking lot.
How do you hide an 11,270 square foot building with landscaping?
Why not just create a building that does fit in with the character of
the neighborhood and preserves privacy and views? Trees or no
trees, the building as proposed will block the neighborhoods' view of
the hills and sunrise and afford second story views into homes.
Trees will lose leaves in the winter, again exposing all the
architectural elements.
The school is uniquely positioned within 100 feet of neighl:5oring
homes -small, ranch style, single-family homes, most under 1,500
sq ft. I can't think of any location in Terra Linda where single family
homes are within 100 feet of a multi story ·ll,OOO sq ft office or
school building. The renderings and story poles have made it clear
that the building would be completely out of place and invasive.

The traffic to and from thjs school from out of the area famil jes. already makes crossing the street on Las

The. Developers keep pushing for more and more housing. They keep claiming we need more "affordable
housing" well is We can'l house in the world. What is wonderful about Marin in the
North Bay is open spaces and residential communities. We have an area in San Rafael that has housing for
more than 9,000 people for affordable units and more around all areas of Marin. We do not want to
turn Marin lnto Sal) Francisco and we can't house everyone in the world. The whole reason Marin is is
because it is residentiaL The City should care more about the quality of life that money
can't buy, not give into developers.

Dear Mr. Stafford,
I would like to join my neighbors in expressing our strong opposition to the the proposed
demolition of a 3,935 square-foot,· single story building for the construction of a 11,250
square-foot, multi-story building with a maximum height of 29 feet above finished
grade. The prospect of this 11,270 foot, multi-story building loom'ing over a residential
neighborhood with a majority of single-story homes like my own, is grossly
inapprop riate .
Mark Day School is located directly behind my home, its current building barely visible
from my yard and home. The proposed much larger and taller building would be clearly
visible from my yard, living room, dining room and master bedroom . I have serious
concerns regarding the proposed building overlooking into my yard and home, with its
obvious privacy issues as well as adverse impact on the quality of light and views into
my yard and home. I share my neighbors concerns regarding similar adverse
consequences of this proposed building on our Terra Linda neighborhood and
community as a whole. .
We are asking that the City of San Rafael decline to approve the building of this
11,250 square-foot, mUlti-story building in our residential community.
Please share this information with the Design Review Board and the Planning
Commission. We very much appreciate your assistance and attention to this matter.
Sincerely,
Carmen P. Irizarry

Dear Mr. Stafford,
As a resident of Terra Linda, I am very much against the proposed
design of the Mark Day School addition.
Seeing the . of the building I couldn't believe it I thought it
was a typo when I read it would be 11,000 sq. ft.
A building this size does not fit with the current feel of our
neighborhood. It is too big, too close to the street My only
. that Mark Day School wants everyone driving by to see their
school. There has to be some compromise. needs to
scaled down or moved back. story polls that went up this week
show how it towers over the neighboring HOUSES. Many
neighbors will have their privacy invaded. Personally, my view of
the hills and sun trees will be damaged forever.
This could not be the intent of our neighborhood zoning laws. I am
willing to work with MDS, but they don't seem to have considered
the neighbors in putting forward this inappropriate design.
you could share my comments with the design review board and
planning con1mission would be appreciated.

Unlike the gym building which blends in nicely, tile of the new building appears completely unrelated to the existing structures.
The elements, in add a very hard, heavy and industrial look to the facade.
It appears that the shows the new building will move much closer to tbe side walk in front, resulting in the elimination of

I strongly this element of the plan, as it will take for any new trees to reach maturity to help to mitigate the

Support for Learning Commons and Creativity Lab at Mark Day School
I am writing to express my support and to encourage you to lend your support for the proposed Learning Commons and
Creativity Lab at Mark Day School. I am a proponent of this new plan as it will greatly enhance the overall educational
experience for my children who are Mark Day students and for generations of San Rafael residents to come .
The Learning Commons and Creativity Lab will create new spaces where both students and faculty can utilize more
modern and flexible spaces and tools. Right now, Mark Day School is somewhat constrained by the structures on its 50
year old campus. This project will create learning spaces for collaborative work for all students -from Kindergarten
through 8th Grade. Isn't this what all parents want for their children-enhancements to their schools at no additional
cost to the community as a whole? I certainly do.
As a San Rafael resident, I also believe that this campus enhancement will be a tremendous asset to the community as a
whole while keeping in line with the master plan ofthe Terra Linda community. The new plans will in no way add to .
congestion of the surrounding neighborhood, will not decrease home values but are being designed and created with
our community values in mind. Mark Day School prides itself on having a relationship with its neighbors that is based on
respect for one a nothe r.
I urge you to support the project.

Dear Mr. Stafford,
As a parent of two children who attend Mark Day School and as residents of San Rafael for the past
ten years, we are writing in support of the proposed Learning Commons and Creativity Lab at Mark
Day School. This project will significantly improve the overall educational experience at Mark Day.
And as San Rafael residents, we believe that this enhancement to our campus will serve as a
resource to the surrounding community.
The Learning Commons and Creativity Lab will allow students and facultyto work with a more
modern and flexible space and tools, opening up opportunities for discovery and learning currently
unavailable. It will give children hands-on experience to conceive of projects and bring them to
fruition using modern tools. Right now, Mark Day School is somewhat constrained by the structures
on its 50 year old campus. This project w i ll help create a 21.5t century learning experience for all
students -from Kindergarten through 8th Grade.
Mark Day School prides itself on having a positive relationship with its neighbors that is based on
respect for one another . The thoughtful planning behind this project is conceived in a way to
minimize disruption to the community, and to take place on an efficient timeline. We believe that
the design and purpose of the Learning Commons an d Creativ ity Lab is in keeping with this
relationship. We urge you to support the project.

Mr. Stafford,
I am writing to express my enthusiasm and support for the proposed Commons and
Creativity at Mark Day School. Our family been part the Mark Day School community for
eighteen years. My husband Patrick and I have two alumni children who first enrolled
kindergarten; one is now a freshman in college and one is a recentcollege graduate. I am a past
of Mark School and am currently employed as the Director of Admissions.
We have San Rafael residents for over twenty years, first the Dominican neighborhood, and
for the last twelve in Lucas Valley. Patrick I have voted for every school bond measure in
Marin, even though our never attended public schools. We it is our responsibility to
support education for future We will for C on November 4. We supported
Dam building project in the '90s when we were neighbors on Grand Avenue
we believed then and believe now that education is most important element in
developing good in a strong society. We we are obligated do whatever we can to
provide great learning environments for the children and young adults in our community.
We believe that proposed Learning Commons and Creativity at Mark Day School will allow
current and future Mark Day School students to become better collaborators and systems
thinkers; it will allow creativity and problem-solving to go hand in hand as students imagine ways in
which they can have a beneficial impact on their fu'ture world, It will aHow them to hone their
communication skills, though traditionalliteracies I reading and writing, and also through media
literacy, which increasingly affects the way we all see, interpret and influence the wor[d.
Joe Harvey talks about the impact of brain research on teaching and learning. Brain research has
transformed the ways in which educators think about pedagogy and practices to deliver
program Our 50-year old campus is in need of updating to provide modern and spaces
and tools to allow us employ that pedagogy and our work for the benefit of the kids.
As always, our community strives to be good neighbors. Our relationship is based on trust, respect
and communIcation. The design for the Learning Commons and Creativity Lab are in keeping
with feel of the neighborhood; no variance is proposed ht or encroachment. The
had in mind the mission and values of the school in designing a sustainable, flexible,
durable learning environment. I urge you to approve the plans.

Mark Day Proposed Project-opposition
I have lived at in Terra Linda fbI' 22 years.
I recently heard about a proposed multi-story, over 11,000 square foot, business building to go in to replace a
single story school building.
I walked by to see the story poles and was horrified at the size .
It simply has no place in a residential neighborhoodl
Beyond the fact that it will negatively affect my property values, conflict with existing design plans in the area
and block views, it will create an industrial feel in a neighborhood that is mostly small single family homes.
Yes, Kaiser is there-but it is further up the hill and they are a necessary addition to the neighborhood.
Yes, St. Isabella's is there-but it is not a massive buildi ng densely clustered with others
Yes, Vallecito's is there-but it is a public school and again, not a 30 foot tall building of over 11,000 sq ft.
I strongly oppose the proposed building at Mark Day School as it has been depicted by visuals.
Please share my comments with the Design Review Board and the Planning Commission.
I will have more comments to make at the November 4th meeting.
Thank you for your time

Mark Day School Learning Commons and Creativity Lab
My name is Tracy Caton Cummings and I am both an educator at Mark Day School and a parent of a
seventh grader there as well. My husband and I want to express our support of the Learning
Commons and Creativity Lab that the school envisions to enhance the educational experience for its
students. '
Our family has lived in the Terra Linda community of San Rafael since 2005 and we enjoy many of
the events and services that the community has to offer its residents. We are members of the Terra
Linda Community Garden and have also contributed our time to the Canal Alliance of San Rafael.
We strongly believe that community involvement and input are critical and have both short and long
term benefits. Mark Day School has a longstanding presence in the community, and like any other
school, must have its facilities upgraded over time in order to keep pace.
Supporting education at all levels benefits everyone, now and looking towards the future. The new
Learning Commons and Creativity Lab will be a tremendous asset to the community.
We understand that. respect among neighbors is critical in any community. Mark Day School has
taken this into account when designing an aesthetically pleasing addition to a school that has,
provided so much to the community. We urge you to support the project.

And, during the planning the school worked hard to consider and the interests our We
have invited the neighbors to join us at meetings a.nd to learn and comment on our plans (twice), we have encouraged
neighbor input/ our head of school has met with parents individually.
The design does not increase the school's physical footprint, enrollment will not increase, and we have maintained open
access to the playing field, the basketball courts and the playgrounds. The new building is warm and welcoming and the
mature trees around the new building keep the look soft and inviting. As a resident in San Rafael, I believe it will an
asset to the community -providing a modern attractive building where one greatly in need of updating currently stands.

son Alexander Brook is a happy grader at this schooL
Both of us have been involved in the San Rafuel/Terra Linda Community. Monica has served on the boa rd the Mont
Marin/San Park Neighborhood Association, and works with our underserved communities in the Canal District in
her position as a nurse at the Marin Community CliniCS. Mike practices at his Greenbrae office and is involved in the
Dixie/Terra Linda Little League.
This has allowed us to interact with many parts of our communitv. We have heard dnd discussed some of the concerns
that have been voiced about the project. We have also seen first hand the benefit Mark Day School's partnership
with children from the Canal district. They have access Mark Day School infrastructure and resources and gain
exposure to 21st century educational methodologies and materials that help to reduce socio-economic discrepancies as

It is our opinion that the majority the in area, Terra are proud of the

It is in the community's interest that we support for high quality in our commu

We also beJiev€:! that in order to keep up with current trends in education and maxim student potential, each school
should have the ability to grow and expand within reasonable limits.
It is our understanding that the Mark Day's project would not significantly alter the skyline and character this part of
the great Terra linda neighborhood and additionally will not result in an increase in student volume, vehicle noise
or evening activity ..
In summary, we believe this will benefit not only Mark Day School and its current and future students, but will

Dear Mr. Stafford,
I would like to join my neighbors in expressing our strong opposition to the the proposed
demolition of a 3,935 square-foot, single story building for the construction of a 11,250
square-foot, multi-story building with a maximum height of 29 feet above finished
grade. The prospect of this 11,270 foot, mUlti-story building looming over a residential
neighborhood with a majority of single-story homes like my own, is grossly
inappropriate .
Mark Day School is located directly behind my home, its current building barely visible
from my yard and home. The proposed much larger and taller building would be clearly
visible from my yard, living room, dining room and master bedroom. I have serious
concerns regarding the proposed building overlooking into my yard and home, with its
obvious privacy issues as well as adverse impact on the quality of light and views into
my yard and home. I share my neighbors concerns regarding similar adverse
consequences of this proposed building on our Terra Linda neighborhood and
community as a whole .
We are asking that the City of San Rafael decline to approve the building of this
11,250 square-foot, multi-story building in our residential community.
Please share this information with the Design Review Board and the Planning
Commission. We very much appreciate your assistance and attention to this matter.
