HomeMy WebLinkAboutFire Commission 2022-02-09 Minutes CITY OF SAN RAFAEL FIRE COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING February 9, 2022 at 4:00 p.m. Meeting Via Zoom The meeting was called to order at 4:02 p.m. by Chair Mizroch. Present: Chair Stephen Mizroch Vice Chair Larry Luckham Commissioner Nadine Hade Commissioner Ken Johnson Commissioner Thomas Weathers Commissioner Stan Burford Commissioner David Fonkalsrud Fire Chief Darin White 1. Open Time for Public Expression No public comments 2. Approval of Minutes Commissioner Luckham had corrections to the minutes of the January Fire Commission meeting Commissioner Luckham moved to adopt the corrected minutes of the January Fire Commission meeting with Commissioner Burford seconding the motion. The minutes were approved unanimously. 3. Fire Foundation Update Chairman Mizroch reported that the Fire Foundation currently has a balance of approximately $97,000, $25,000 of which was recently raised. Chairman Mizroch reported that the Fire Foundation is still evaluating the annual Crab Feed and if this is the optimal vehicle for SRFF fundraising. Chairman Mizroch updated on two SRFF projects: - A training and education trip by Angel Landaverde of SRFD to Guatemala - A breakfast “thank you” to be delivered to SRFD stations in April to recognize the hard work of SRFD teams throughout COVID Chairman Mizroch reported that Jack Devlin will end his term at SRFF in June. 4. Historic Subcommittee Update No updates 5. Commissioners’ Reports Commissioner Mizroch noted that next month will end his final term on the Fire Commission. Motions to appoint Commissioner Luckham as Chair and Commissioner Hade as Vice Chair were unanimously approved by the Fire Commission. Commissioner Luckham shared his experiences with Angel Landaverde and his work with the Firefighters Without Borders organization that helps provide training and equipment donations in underserved countries. Commissioner Luckham also called out the need to acknowledge SRFD firefighters and the challenges they have encountered with COVID. Commissioner Weathers commented on the recent wildfire at Stinson Beach. Commissioner Hade had no report. Commissioner Johnson commented that students from Marin schools under the Archdiocese of San Francisco could be available fo r volunteering for SRFD fundraising and other events, as they have service hour requirements. Commissioner Johnson also shared materials with background on the increasing challenges for residents to access fire insurance. Commissioner Fonkalsrud commented on recent events in Baltimore and Stockton related to firefighter safety while responding to incidents. Chief White commented on the safety processes in place at SRFD. Commissioner Burford shared his recent experience in taking a 2 am call from SRFD to assist with a neighbor having a medical emergency, and how his neighbor’s Apple watch was instrumental in the emergency response. 6. Fire Chief’s Report Chief White updated on the following activity/incidents: - MWPA: Grants are currently available for applicants, retroactive to 2021, and will be available on a first come, first serve basis. - COVID: Agencies in California are taking a more definitive stance on requiring vaccinations for a variety of positions, including emergency responders, and there could be an order from Marin County Public Health soon. SRFD will be monitoring for any staffing implications. SRFD will also be monitoring for any new variants, and it will continue the use of masks, social distancing, surface disinfecting and other COVID procedures. - Merrydale Ave. Incident: A bedroom fire on January 24th. Some detectors worked and all were safe. A Ring camera provided helpful information for the investigation. - Auto Rollover Incident on N. San Pedro Rd.: A passerby Good Samaritan tumbled down a hill while trying to assist occupants of the rolled over vehicle. SRFD personnel assisted with both. - Station Renovations: The renovations of Stations 54 and 55 are underway. - Planned Ceremony at SR Public Safety Center: Considering a Fall opening, depending on COVID. Meeting adjourned at 4:53 pm
