Los participantes identificaron
cinco conclusiones principales
(Testimonio #62)
Participants Reached Five Central
Conclusions
Conclusion #1
The fear is real.
I don't go out anymore, I'm afraid to go out, so I prefer [to
wait] until another day to go out early. I know people who
have said that there are streets that are dangerous when it
is dark, sometimes you do not see who is attacking you,
well it is scary. So they tell you that [it’s dangerous], so it
scares you and because of that fear, you don't go out on the
street anymore. (Testimony 8)
It's scary, because sometimes, as I told you, there are
people who aren't... they're not right in the head and
sometimes they act differently, that is, they have bad
intentions, well, that's true. So there’s no way you can have
trust. So there are parts where it’s dark at 6:00 and lighting
is needed. In your mind you’re saying I'm not going to
take… to go out because there isn't much light there, in
case something happens. (Testimony #36)
Conclusion #2
There is a
genuine need
in the Canal
community for
support and
help.
I don't know if you have heard, they have been stealing
many catalytic converters and the truth is that it is very
expensive to repair that, and we, well, we are human beings
and we feel it, really. We would like you to support us.
(Testimony #5)
In the most sincere way, on behalf of all the inhabitants of
all the people here, in the most sincere way, we ask for
support, right? Because I repeat, it is not only for one
person, it is not only for vehicles, not only for pedestrians. It
is for the entire city, so let's remember that a problem….
does not only come by itself, it brings many behind it.
(Testimony #62)
Conclusión #3
La falta de
seguridad
pública afecta a
las personas
de muchas
maneras.
Económicamente: Robo de autos, herramientas, convertidores catalíticos;
(Testimonio #40)
Conclusion #3
The lack of
public security
affects people
in many ways.
Economically: Theft of cars, tools, catalytic converters; broken car
windows
There is no protection, there is car theft, there is vandalism, they break
the windows, they also steal the catalytic converters…We would like there
to be lighting or have an illuminated city just like in other cities where one
feels safe. (Testimony #45)
Mentally/Emotionally: Fear of theft, assault, trauma, and anxiety
Well, the experience with this is that it's scary to go out because since it's
very dark, and then sometimes you want to go out with the children and
you can't because since the day ends before you leave work, you don't
have time to share with the children. It is not because one does not want
to, but because of work….then there's no time for the children and we
lock ourselves in more with TV or on the telephone. So we are doing them
harm. (Testimony #48)
Physically: People are unable to leave the house in the evening to
exercise
I am interested that they put more lamps because it is very important for
us who are going to walk in the afternoons, because during the day we
start working and in the afternoon we can do our activities with our family,
so I would like them to put more light in the area where children walk and
bike. (Testimony #40)
Conclusión #4
La comunidad está
preocupada por el
bienestar de sus hijos
pues se ven obligados a
quedarse en casa por la
noche. No pueden ir al
parque y pasan la noche
jugando con teléfonos,
tabletas y
computadoras ya que
no hay otras
oportunidades
recreacionales.
salga a caminar. A que los niños jueguen. Que no es para
jugar ni para andar tomando. (Testimonio #23)
campo. (Testimonio #26)
Conclusion #4
The community is
particularly concerned
about the effect on the
children: unable to go to
the park in the evening
because of the lack of
safety, and forced to
stay indoors on their
phones, tablets, and
computers.
Because you see that at home they are frustrated or just want
to be on the phone or on the tablet or on the computer, but
sometimes you take them out to the park so they can get
distracted and leave those electronic things. Because with
those things they can ruin their eyes and even they learn things
that they shouldn’t learn there, so we need more security just
like in the park more light because of those who are drinking
and gambling. Well, something should be done, well, so that
they leave that free for one to walk so that the children can go
to play, to have fun, only this. (Testimony #23)
Conclusion #5
There is conflict
over the use of
space in the park.
Well, yes, it would be for them to find out well, about… to talk
to people because what they are doing is not right, to be there
all the time, it’s so that a person can go out for a walk. So that
the children play. It’s not to gamble or to go drinking.
(Testimony #23)
Well, prevent men from smoking and gambling there because it
is bad for the children who are in the park, they draw all the
smoke from the cigarette and it is very bad for the children and
that is an area where the children have to play and not men.
(Testimony #25)
The adults who are there are taking away the children being
able to play because they can be gambling on the field.
(Testimony #26)
conductores.
No vemos a personas que puedan cruzar si vamos
conduciendo.
(Testimonio 62)
Participants Created Six
Recommendations Related to Lighting
and Public Security
Recommendation #1: Increase lighting along the 7 routes identified by Voces del
Canal. Use survey data to prioritize lighting routes.
Recommendation #2: Improve pedestrian safety, including
●Improve crosswalks, add lighting at crosswalks, and install pedestrian beacons
●Increase pedestrian lighting on sidewalks
●Repair sidewalks
●Install speed bumps
●Use radar to reduce the speed of drivers
We do not see people who want to cross if
we are driving. And if we are pedestrians,
then we take the risk that the driver will not
see us either. (Testimony 62)
(Testimonio #57)
Recomendación #4: Instalar cámaras de seguridad
Este sería muy bueno de que
también apoyara o saliera un
proyecto para las cámaras
también. Qué es muy de mucha
utilidad y es mucho mejor, verdad.
Porque ya ven que también los
policías no hacen nada sin que
uno no presente alguna prueba
bien sea si usted lo vio o lo
encontró esté robando sus cosas o
si tiene algún vídeo. (Testimonio
#6)
Recommendation #3: Increase parking availability
Yes, I park far away, but if it gets dark I have to run. (Testimony #57)
Recommendation #4: Install security cameras
This would be very good if they
also supported or came out with a
project for the cameras as well.
Which is very useful, and it’s
much better, really. Because you
also see that the police do nothing
without you presenting some good
proof, whether it is if you saw the
person or found him stealing your
things or if you have a video.
(Testimony #6)
calles, pues. Uno sabiendo pues que
haya alguien vigilando para que uno
pueda salir y o visitar a veces algún
fuman cigarrillo o cualquier
otro tipo de sustancia que
utilicen para que haya un poco
más de seguridad para nuestros
niños, nuestra comunidad
latina, verdad. (Testimonio #21)
Gracias a Canal Alliance,
Universidad Dominicana,
la Ciudad de San Rafael
y el Departamento de
Policía de San Rafael por
apoyar este proyecto.
Esperamos fortalecer
nuestras alianzas
mientras trabajamos
juntos para aumentar la
iluminación e mejorar la
seguridad pública en el
Canal.
Recommendation #5: Increase communication and collaboration with the police.
The community would like to work together with the police to create a
Neighborhood Safety Committee that develops policies for effective community
policing.
Well, more than anything, more
security, more security for all the
streets, because what is needed is
security so that there is, for example,
there were always some guards at
night so that one feels safer when
walking in the streets. Knowing that
there is someone watching so that one
can go out and sometimes visit a
family member, well with that, well
one feels safer to be able to go out at
night. (Testimony 24)
Recommendation #6: Provide a safe place for children to play outdoors by
increasing lighting around Pickleweed Park in the evenings and prohibiting
gambling, drinking, smoking and drug use near children’s play areas.
Well, my opinion about the
situation in the Canal, in the
park mainly it’s a recreation
center for children more than
anything, that there is enough
control with people who use
alcohol and smoke cigarettes or
any other type of substance that
they use so that there is a little
more security for our children,
our Latino community, really.
(Testimony #21)
Thank you to Canal
Alliance, Dominican
University, the City of
San Rafael, and the San
Rafael Police
Department for
supporting this project.
We look forward to
strengthening our
partnerships as we work
together to increase
lighting and improvise
public security in the
Canal.
