Page 1 of 3 LIBRARY BOARD OF TRUSTEES AGENDA REPORT June 14, 2022 Item #4 TITLE: California Library Association Conference Report SUMMARY The City of San Rafael’s Library and Recreation Department sent 10 staff to the recent California Library Association Conference in Sacramento between June 2 and 4, 2022. This year’s conference theme was “Together Towards Tomorrow”. Six San Rafael staff participated in presenting three conference presentations. Staff also attended preconference sessions on Thursday June 2nd and concurrent conference sessions June 3rd and 4th. RECOMMENDATION: That the Board of Trustees receive the California Library Association Conference Report. BACKGROUND: Annually, employees of the library attend the California Library Association conference. Staff usually support the conference by presenting and sometimes help organize the event as members of the California Library Association. The conference was held virtually in 2021 due to the pandemic and was cancelled in 2020 . Usually, the conference takes place in late October or early November, and the conference location traditionally rotates between Southern and Northern California. Because of the COVID pandemic however the conference will take place two years consecutively, in June, in Sacramento. In the past, due to venue logistics, the conference had taken place two years consecutively in Pasadena, CA. This year’s conference attendance was considerably less than usual at only 800 attendees. At the 2019 conference in Pasadena there were approximately 1700 attendees. DISCUSSION: San Rafael Staff attended some or all of the three days of the conference. A mix of staff will be sharing what they learned as part of the presentation to the Board regarding this item. The following were the presentations that included San Rafael Staff: Community Wellness with Comfort Dog: Library and Public Safety Partnership San Rafael Library is partnering with the San Rafael Police Department to create a new kind of Community Wellness Assistant position to proactively encourage Page 2 of 3 positive behavior in the main downtown library. Working with the Police Department's Mental Health Liaison and the police comfort canine, we are creating a new position trained by the police, funded by the library, dedicated to using a proactive, canine assisted approach to actively address issues surrounding homelessness in the downtown library. Presenters: Henry Bankhead, Lynn Murphy Mental Health Liaison, San Rafael Police Department, Jennifer Madrid, Community Wellness Assistant, San Rafael Public Libraries. Preferred Not Required: Round Two (with Feeling) This is a second round of the perennial discussion about why the master’s degree in Library and Information Science, though beneficial, should not be a requirement for librarian positions. The panel will expound upon the reasons, experience and evidence that underscores the necessity of an experiential based path for librarianship, gained through work in the field, which should be embraced as a parallel path to success and promotion in public libraries. Presenters: Henry Bankhead, Jamie Poirier: Deputy Director | Public Services Solano County Library; Basia Jędruszczak and Alejandra Barrios Librarians: San Rafael Public Libraries Ebooks for All The State Library is happy to bring to your public library access to a collection of 40,000 YA and Children's eBooks. In addition, your library can join the Palace Project and use an open source, privacy friendly eReader that can pull content from your other eBook providers (like CloudLibrary and Overdrive). Meet the team, hear from libraries that are already working on the project and learn about the outreach and implementation supports that are in place to make this project successful for your library. This project is supported in whole or in part by the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) under the provisions of the American Rescue Plan Act, administered in California by the State Librarian. Presenters: Christopher R. Durr, Library Programs Consultant, California state Library: Jen Lemberger, American Rescue Plan Act Coordinator, California State Library, Henry Bankhead, Assistant Library and Recreation Director / City Librarian: San Rafael Public Libraries: Migell Acosta, Library Director- San Diego County Library: Micah May, Director of Ebook Services - Digital Public Library of America.
