HomeMy WebLinkAboutLib Accept Library Grant to Fund New Library PPTENVISIONING A NEW LIBRARY FOR SAN RAFAEL SARAH HOUGHTON LIBRARY DIRECTOR DOWNTOWN SAN RAFAEL LIBRARY HISTORY • Built in 1908 • Funded by Andrew Carnegie and the local Women's Christian Temperence Union • 3 expansions/remodels • Last expanded in 1976 THE NEED FOR A NEW LIBRARY BUILDING Starting in 1970, when the population was 38,000, the City began to state the need for a new downtown facility: "The principal problem with the library today is that it simply does not have adequate space in which to carry on an adequate program." Vivian Smith, Library Director (1970) TODAY San Rafael Population: 58,994 Library Size: 15,000 square feet Collection Size: 120,000 (space meant for 7,000) 457,727 physical items checked out last year 350,724 visitors last year HOW WE GOT HERE • 2003: City of San Rafael General Plan 2020 (section CA - 11) states that the City should "renovate and expand or replace" the Library • 2004: Library Foundation formed to lead efforts to build a 21St Century Library for San Rafael • 2012: Fundraising feasibility study conducted • 2014: Public visioning about what the community wants for a new library California State Library awarded a Library Services and Technology Act Grant to the San Rafael Public Library for $15,800 to envision a new library for San Rafael. Two day visioning workshop Day 1: Stakeholders & staff review survey results to build a draft vision statement Day 2: Show draft at community meeting and finalize vision statement Conducted by ZingTrain IN THE VISION • Create a vision of success for a new San Rafael Public Library facility • Learn how to explain the vision to the community • Continue with community education and input efforts WHAT WE'RE ASKING Staff Recommendation: Please approve the Library's acceptance of the Library Services and Technology Act Grant for $15,800.
