PLANNING COMMISSION INTERVIEWS Questions for Applicants June, 2015 What are your specific interests or topics that draw you to service on the Planning Commission (e.g., promoting affordable housing, protecting the environment, neighborhood representation, sustainability, promoting business or commerce)? 2. What do you find are the most important planning challenges for the City? 3. What is your vision of San Rafael in the future? What changes would you like to see in the City? 4. What do you believe are the important attributes of an excellent Planning Commissioner? What can you offer to the City as a Planning Commissioner? 5. Can you please explain the purpose and importance of the City's General Plan? How is the General Plan used in assessing a project and making land use decisions as a Planning Commissioner? If appointed/re-appointed to the Commission, how would you evaluate a project that is consistent with all regulations, including the Zoning and General Plan, but is opposed by the local neighbor association? 7. There is a project before you as a Commissioner that complies with all adopted City standards and policies. Specifically, let's say the project meets the height limit. However, you do not personally agree with height limit for the area and believe it to be too high. How would you approach this conflict? The City prepared two "Station Area Plans" for areas around the two SMART rail stations (Downtown and Civic Center). What are your thoughts about higher density housing around the rail stations? Do you think higher density housing is appropriate in these areas and can be designed to be consistent with the character and scale of the community?
