MICHAEL WATENPAUGH WHEREAS, on June 16, 2008, Dr. Mike Watenpaugh was appointed by the San Rafael City Council to serve on the Canalfront Advisory Committee as part of the Canalfront Conceptual Design Plan project; and WHEREAS, the Canalfront Advisory Committee was responsible for developing a recommended plan to identify the Bay Trail alignment from the Pickleweed Community Center to Pt. San Pedro Road, public access to and along the Canal, a crossing between the north and south sides of the Canal, and design guidelines for new buildings on the waterfront, which it did in collaboration with the community -at -large; and WHEREAS, the Canalfront Advisory Committee hosted seven focus groups on October 1, 2008, held a community workshop in October 2008 to hear ideas for improvements along the waterfront, held a community workshop in March 2009 for feedback on three alternative plans, made 18 presentations during summer 2009 for comments on the draft plan, and agreed on short term and long term actions the City of San Rafael should pursue to implement the community's vision for the Canalfront; and WHEREAS, Mike, as superintendent of San Rafael City Schools, helped to ensure school district participation in the planning process, and provided Bahia Vista School as a venue for the community workshop held October 2008; and WHEREAS, the Canalfront Advisory Committee's work resulted in a unanimous recommendation of a conceptual plan and design guidelines that capture the community's vision for a beautiful and enjoyable pathway around the Canal, and that focus City actions and inspire the community to action.
