HomeMy WebLinkAboutCC Resolution 12238 (Support Public Library Foundation)RESOLUTION 12238 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SAN RAFAEL TO SUPPORT FULL FUNDING OF THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA'S PUBLIC LIBRARY FOUNDATION. WHEREAS, the State of California passed legislation establishing the Public Library Foundation 24 years ago, in order to ensure that all Californians have access to high quality library services and programs; and WHEREAS, the Public Library Foundation is the only source of funding for public libraries that benefits every Californian equally; and WHEREAS, Public Library Foundation funding is used by local libraries throughout the state to provide vitally needed reading, education, job development, technology, and lifelong learning resources to people; and WHEREAS, at no time in its 24 -year existence has the Public Library Foundation been fully funded; and WHEREAS, full funding of the Public Library Foundation would require $94.22 million, while it is currently funded at a proposed $21,308,000, a difference of $1.92 per capita; and WHEREAS, full funding of the Public Library Foundation would result in a benefit to the City of San Rafael in the amount of approximately $136,950, which would greatly help pay for library services in our City. NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SAN RAFAEL DOES RESOLVE, AS FOLLOWS: The City of San Rafael supports full funding for the State of California's Public Library Foundation, at a rate of approximately $2.49 per capita, as originally mandated and intended by legislation passed in 1983; and directs a letter and copy of this resolution be sent to our representatives in the State Senate and Assembly, and to the State's Governor. I, Jeanne M. Leoncini, Clerk of the City of San Rafael, hereby certify that the foregoing Resolution was duly and regularly introduced and adopted at a regular meeting of the City Council of the City of San Rafael, held on Monday, the 7t' of May, 2007, by the following vote, to wit: AYES: Councilmembers: Cohen, Heller, Miller and Mayor Boro NOES: Councilmembers: None ABSENT: Councilmembers: Phillips Jeanne M.
